Based on the life of Louis “Zamp” Zamperini as recorded in Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken, “Zamp and the Bird” explores themes of hardship, suffering, forgiveness and healing. Zamp in his time as a Japanese prisoner of war in WWII had a fraught relationship with a particularly cruel guard nicknamed “The Bird” by the prisoners. Upon his release and subsequent homecoming, Zamp found he was still haunted by the torture he endured at the hands of the bird. Forced to confront his anger and desire for revenge, Zamp finds the true meaning of freedom.
